3 DAYS NYUNGWE FOREST SAFARI
3 DAYS NYUNGWE FOREST SAFARI.
Overview.
This 3 days primate safari in Nyungwe forest takes you to Rwanda’s oldest and most biodiverse forest. Nyungwe is located in the south western region, at the southern tip of Lake Kivu, north of Burundian boarder. Not only is Nyungwe a primate-rich forest, but it is the best well preserved mountain rainforest across the east and central African region.
This safari will lead to the untouched natural habitats of chimpanzees as well as an adventurous canopy walk to observe some of Nyungwe forest’s best kept secrets.
Safari day by day.
Day 1: Kigali to Nyungwe forest.
Leave Kigali in the morning, either upon arrival or pick up from the hotel; for morning flights, then we’ll leave Kigali after breakfast and head southwards through Nyanza and Butare where you have opportunities to visit ethnographic museum as well as the King’s palace. Here you’ll get more information about the ancient Rwandan culture, art, traditions, dress codes and political organization.
Have lunch and continue to Nyungwe forest, arriving in the evening for relaxation, scenery viewing or optional nature / forest walks.
Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk in Nyungwe forest.
On this day, you get to experience the highlights of this tour; chimp trekking and canopy walk. The day begins with a warm breakfast to shake away the morning coldness. Leave the lodge at 7:30am to attend a pre-trek briefing where ranger guides will advise you about the regulations and rules to observe during this great adventure.
After this session, continue to the forest to search for your cousins, chimps which live deep in the forest. Soon you’ll start hearing their calls and laughs. They stay up in the tree branches and rarely come down but with luck, you may spot an entire family just close to you, presenting a great opportunity for clear photography and selfies. Among other forest dwellers include mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, colobus monkeys and so much more primates and mammal species.
Return to the lodge for lunch and short relaxation, thereafter go on a canopy walk to explore not only bird species that are unique and rare but also elusive forest residents including butterflies, forest elephants, hogs and abundant flora. Return to the lodge for dinner and evening relaxation.
Day 3: Return to Kigali.
Early breakfast as you gaze at the misty forest. Check out of the lodge room and begin a transfer back to Kigali city. You will have lunch enroute, coupled with a few excursions including a tour to Kabgayi cathedral of our lady in Huye and a visit to women drumming group. Continue to Kigali city for an evening flight or hotel drop off.
