Overview.
The 3 days Samburu National Reserve Safari is an experience of Kenya’s wilderness, on the pristine banks of Ewaso Ng’iro River and within the Rift Valley Province of this magical safari country. Samburu is one of Kenya’s rarely visited Reserves, yet it is teeming with beauty and diversity. Visiting this Reserve means encountering lions, reticulated giraffes, impalas, Grevy’s zebras, Black rhinoceros, Gerenuk, Cape Buffaloes, Defassa waterbucks, elephants, Kirk’s Dik-Dik, Beisa Oryx, Nile crocodiles, Olive baboons, Hippos, cheetahs, Grant’s gazelles, leopards, warthogs and many others.
This National Reserve shelters over 350 species of birds within its 165 square kilometer area with most sought-after species being Palmnut vultures, guinea fowls, tawny eagles, Marabou storks, Somali Ostriches, Lilac-breasted rollers, grey-headed kingfishers, yellow-billed hornbills, Verreaux’s eagles and superb starlings among others.
Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Depart Nairobi City for Samburu National Reserve.
Pick-up from the Hotel/Guesthouse or any other location in Nairobi City at 6:00am after a lovely breakfast and proceed to Samburu National Park. Drive towards the lush agricultural area of Mount. Kenya Del Monte Kenya-a food processing Company that operates the planting, production and canning/packaging of Pineapple products in addition to crossing the Equator before getting to Nanyuki Town (perfect for mountain climbers).
Lunch will be en-route and also make a stop at the shopping Mall to pick out a few items. Continue enjoying the scenic drive through Isiolo Town and arrive Samburu National Reserve in the afternoon. Go ahead and check-in at the Lodge for relaxation for the rest of the day/evening.
Day 2: Full day in Samburu National Reserve.
You have the entire day to explore the incredible Samburu National Reserve and begin this adventurous day with breakfast at the Lodge. With its small size, you would be worried whether it’s worth spending a whole day exploring but you can rest assured that even one day is not enough. Sights of African wild dogs, Beisa Oryx, Gravy’s zebras, elephants, lions, reticulated giraffes, leopards, Rhinoceros and many others should be expected during the game drive. For birders, Samburu National Reserve will take your breath away.
Enjoy a picnic Lunch or return to the Lodge then continue with the game drive that leads you to the local Samburu Villages for remarkable cultural experiences and make sure to purchase some of their cultural souvenirs. After the interesting community visit, return to your place of stay in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Drive from Samburu National Reserve to Nairobi City.
Samburu National Reserve is undoubtedly small in size but its historical significance, made famous by Conservationists George and Joy Adamson who raised Elsa the Lioness. Start the last day of your tour with a hefty breakfast by 6:00am before proceeding for the game drive that gives you another chance to exploring and discovering this rarely visited Reserve.
Look out for the predators-lions and leopards during their morning hunt and other wildlife species missed during the precious days. Exit Samburu National Reserve and return to Nairobi City with Lunch break at Nanyuki and be in the City in the evening with a drop off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or any other location.
