Overview.
The untouched wilderness of Kidepo Valley National Park together with the wide range of extraordinary wildlife species not found anywhere in Uganda, profusion of bird species and eye-catching landscapes can be best explored through the 4 days Kidepo Valley National Park Safari.
Established in 1962, Kidepo Valley National Park presently extends for over 1442 square kilometers and shelters unique wildlife species that you can’t find in other places in the country such as cheetahs, Somalia Ostriches, pygmy crocodiles, side-striped jackals, African golden cats in addition to over 475 species of birds, some of which are endemic to the area. This short safari starts and ends in Kampala or Entebbe.
Trip itinerary.
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Kidepo Valley National Park.
Morning pick-up from your place of residence in Kampala at 6:00am for a transfer to Kidepo valley National Park, via Gulu highway. Admire the undulating scenery along the way and proceed with the journey to Gulu city for lunch.
After several hours of driving, the glimpse of a semi-arid vegetation, rugged terrain and sights of zebra, elephants, Masai giraffes and Defassa waterbucks is a sign of reaching the untouched wilderness. Hot meal and overnight stay at one of the wilderness Lodges.
Day 2: Early Morning game drive and afternoon community visit.
After breakfast, you will undertake a game drive within the awe-inspiring wilderness of Kidepo Valley National Park to spot a profusion of wildlife species as well as dramatic landscapes. A drive through the Narus Valley (Oasis of the Park) is very rewarding with sightings of elephants, zebras, Defassa waterbucks, buffaloes, Impalas, Uganda Kobs, Oribis, lions, common elands and leopards, not leaving out the numerous bird species including the Cappatal’s francolin, Karamoja Apalis and Somalia ostriches among others.
After this awesome game drive, get back to the Lodge for a hot meal and in the afternoon have an encounter with the Karamojong community. From here, take a guided walk through their homesteads (Manyatta), be entertained in their energetic cultural dances and admire/purchase traditional jewelry.
Day 3: Hike Mount Morungole and evening game drive.
After a sumptuous breakfast, transfer to the starting point for the Mount Morungole Hike, southern borders of Kidepo Valley National Park. Start the hike to the 2750-meters high mountain, ancestral home to the rare IK Tribe (a unique tribe with less than 20,000 people) and known for an outstanding culture and history. The entire hike (ascending and descending) lasts 8 hours but offers views of monkeys, birds and Karamoja Plains in addition to being a wonderful photography spot.
In the evening undertake a guided evening game drive to introduce you to the nocturnal life in the Park such as leopards, Caracal, lions, striped hyenas, side-striped jackals, cheetahs, Aardwolf and many others. This Park is one of the few fantastic places for night/evening game drives and later return to the Lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Leave Kidepo Valley National Park for Kampala or Entebbe.
Early breakfast and right away leave this unblemished wilderness area for Kampala or Entebbe. Lunch is enroute and arrive in the evening for check-in at a hotel or transfer to the Airport to catch-up with your flight back home.
