Overview.
Our 4 days Mgahinga Gorillas and Golden Monkeys Tour is one of the most exciting short primate tours, leading to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in south-western Uganda. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park covers an area of 33.7 square kilometers, making it the country’s smallest National Park but it is the only place in the country where silver (mountain gorillas) meet gold (golden monkeys).
Starting and ending in Kampala, this tour is perfect for visitors with little time to their exposure yet desire to trek mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Pick-up from Entebbe International Airport or Hotel in Kampala and drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
For visitors just arriving Uganda on the first day of the tour, it is advisable if arrival time is between 5:00 and 8:00am. However, it is more convenient to arrive the day before so that on this day you just get picked from your place of residence in Kampala or Entebbe. Briefing first and followed by a drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in south-western Uganda with stopovers at Uganda Equator for 30 minutes of photography and observation of equator experiments in addition to relaxing bones and hot cup of tea/coffee.
Another stop is at Igongo Cultural Center in Biharwe (before Mbarara Town) for Lunch and insight into Banyankole culture. Continue with the scenic drive through the terraced rolling hills and spine-chilling roads of Kisoro, arriving Mgahinga in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
After breakfast, your driver will pick you up from the Lodge for a drive to Ntebeko Visitor Center for briefing and registration which will require your passport as well as gorilla permits. This is done by UWA Park rangers who also take you through the guidelines to be followed while trekking mountain gorillas and at 8am start the search through the forest for the Park’s only habituated gorilla family-Nyakagezi family.
Trekking this family is relatively easy given the fact that it usually occupies a narrow home range. One hour is the time you will have in their presence after 1-4 hours of trekking, then get back to the Lodge for hot meal (Lunch), unwinding, dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Unforgettable Golden Monkey tracking / Habituation experience.
After a wonderful rest and good night sleep, be up early for breakfast and another transfer to the Park Headquarters for another half or full day in the jungles of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, for golden monkey tracking or the Habituation Experience. First attend briefing on arrival at the Park Headquarters before finally setting out into the forest to search for the golden monkeys.
If tracking an already habituated golden monkey troop, you will spend one hour in their presence but if you are following a team of researchers for a troop still undergoing habituation, you will have four fours in their presence but the tracking process is the same. If time permits, you can head for a canoe experience along the scenic Lake Mutanda and return to the Lodge for diner and overnight stay as well as several relaxing Lodge activities.
Day 4: Depart from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in south-western Uganda to Entebbe/or Kampala
This is the last day of your short tour and begins with breakfast, followed by check-out of the Lodge in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and return to Entebbe International Airport for departure fight.
