Chimpanzee trekking, the Canopy walk and hiking through one of the 13 hiking trails are some of the things to expect from this short safari. The Safari starts and ends in the beautiful City of Kigali.
Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival in Rwanda (through Kigali International Airport) and drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park.
On arriving Rwanda, our driver will already be at Kigali International Airport to welcome you into this remarkable country. He/she will take you through the interesting facts about the country and briefing on the short safari, before leaving for Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Enroute make a stop at Nyanza, home to the former King’s Palace. Take a tour of this Palace to see “Inyambo” cattle with huge horns, take part in traditional sorghum grinding for making local brew, and buy some of the Rwandan crafts such as wooden sculptures, sandals and handbags. Have Lunch and continue to this forested National Park while enjoying views of the lush tea plantations before arriving the Park in the evening for sumptuous dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking adventure and afternoon canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Be served breakfast early to allow you transfer to Uwinka Visitor Center for briefing on the set guidelines to follow while trekking or when in the presence of the chimpanzees. Briefing is done by the Park officials who will then allocate you to one of the chimpanzee troops here and by 8am start the trek through the forest. You will encounter other primate species, birds, unique tree species, butterflies and reptiles while trekking for the chimpanzees and this lasts 1-3 hours. One hour is the time you have on spotting them to take photos and watch their outstanding behavior before returning to the Lodge for Lunch.
An afternoon canopy walk via the Igishigishigi Trail comprising a bridge suspended about 50 meters above the forest floor rewards visitors with views of different primate species, birds and outstanding tree species among others. After 2 hours of this walk, get back to the Lodge for rest, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Guided forest walk and afternoon visit to Gisakura Tea Estates.
Early breakfast and with packed Lunch walk to the Visitor Center for another briefing before starting the hike through one of the hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest. Several mammals-elephants, bushbucks, buffaloes and duikers, birds, waterfalls, wetlands, butterflies and reptiles will be explored through the guided forest walks. With the help of the ranger guide find a good spot to enjoy your Lunch and rest for a while.
Proceed for the walk through Gisakura Tea Estates (along the northern edge of the Park) to learn the process of planting, weeding, harvesting and finally tasting tea grown in the lush rolling hills of Rwanda, within Gisakura. Surprisingly, a number of bird species will be spotted during the walk and return to the Lodge for meals and overnight stay.
Day 4: Leave Nyungwe Forest National Park for Kigali and undertake a short City tour.
Breakfast and immediately embark on a return journey to the City of Kigali, where you will right away start the tour of its spectacular tourist sites. Make a stop at Gisozi Genocide Site (also Kigali Genocide Memorial Site) to pay respect to the 250,000 people that lost their lives during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Craft village where you will purchase African wear, souvenirs and many others. Have lunch and connect to Kigali International Airport for your return flight.
