7 DAYS RWANDA SAFARI.
Overview.
The 7 days Rwanda Safari is a full-week of touring Rwanda’s top three National Parks-Nyungwe Forest National Park for Chimpanzee trekking and the invigorating Canopy walk, Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking and cultural tour/or tour of the Twin Lakes as well as Akagera National Park for game viewing and boat ride on Lake Ihema in addition to watersports in Lake Kivu to relax the mind and rejuvenate your fatigued body. The safari will start and end from Kigali City.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Road trip to Akagera National Park.
In the morning after breakfast at a hotel or any other place of residence in Kigali, be picked-up by your safari guide for a scenic road trip to Akagera National Park. Before leaving for the Park, first have a brief tour of the City’s tourist sites such as the Kigali memorial site, Inema Arts Center and gallery and Kimironko local food market among others.
Drive to the Park and be served a hot meal on arrival to allow you relax and wait for the first activity in the Park-evening game drive. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the booked lodge/Hotel/Tented Camp.
Day 2: Morning game drive and thrilling boat ride on Lake Ihema.
The second day of your one-week safari will start with breakfast and morning game drive. It’s on this drive that you will see the olive baboons, lions, Rhinos, zebras, vervet monkeys, Hippos, buffaloes, bushbucks, gazelles, Oribis, Masai giraffes and warthogs in their hiding places or freely roaming on the vast savannah plains.
Lunch will be served by 12 or 1pm so that by 2pm you can embark on the boat ride on Lake Ihema where another set of wildlife and bird species will be encountered. Expect to see Nile crocodiles and Hippos in addition to bird species especially African fish eagles, papyrus gonolek and grey-crowned cranes among others. Dinner and overnight will be at the Lodge, within Akagera National Park.
Day 3: Transfer to the verdant Nyungwe Forest National Park.
The third day of this safari is for traveling to Nyungwe Forest National Park, the home to the largest surviving Afro-montane tropical rainforest in East and Central Africa. Breakfast will be at the Lodge in Akagera National Park, lunch enroute while dinner and overnight will be at a lodge in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking and the soul-stirring Canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Early breakfast at the Lodge and immediately drive to Uwinka Visitor Center for briefing on dos and don’ts of trekking and being in the presence of the chimpanzees. Be led by an armed ranger through the forest to search for the chimpanzees for 1-3 hours and when found, take pictures of them swinging on tree branches, playing, feeding and resting, but after one hour you will have to leave their presence to return to the Lodge for Lunch.
After replenishing your body with food and water, move or be driven to Uwinka Visitor Center for the daring canopy walk that offers views of the primate species, birds and tree species from 50 meters above the ground. On finalizing the walk, drive through the vast tea estates at the brim of the forest. Overnight and dinner at the same Lodge as the previous day.
Day 5: Road transfer to Volcanoes National Park and optional visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village.
In the morning after breakfast pack your bags for your next stop-Volcanoes National Park in north-western Rwanda. Have Lunch en-route and arrive in the late afternoon for a visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. However, this visit will depend on arrival time as well as whether you are fatigued or not. Dinner and overnight at the booked Safari Lodge within the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park.
Day 6: Gorilla Trekking and transfer to Lake Kivu area for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Gorilla trekking is one of the iconic and magical wildlife experiences and a safari to Africa without visiting the endangered mountain gorillas is incomplete. On this day have breakfast and drive to Kinigi Park Headquarters for registration, briefing on trekking guidelines and allocation into gorilla families. At 8am the trek for the gorillas through the thick forest begins and lasts 2-5 hours, including the mandated one hour in their midst.
Retreat to the Lodge for Lunch and connect to Gisenyi city – Lake Kivu for relaxation. On arrival, choose between water sports (jet skiing, Kayaking and boat rides), sunbathing or swimming. Dinner and overnight will be at one of the stupendous Lodges/Hotels/Motels on the pristine shores of the Lake.
Day 7: Transfer to Kigali City
Breakfast at the Lodge while enjoying views of the Lake and transfer to Kigali City/International Airport.
