Day 1: Arrival. Overnight at Kibumba Tented Camp.
The “Mikeno Mist package” tour begins from Goma daily; you will be picked up by Virunga park rangers after check in and document verification at the passport control office, near the Grande Barriere boarder. It is here that you will also purchase Virunga gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hiking permits.
Evening relaxation and overnight stay at Kibumba tented camp, in the heart of Virunga conservation area.
Day 2: Virunga National Park – Gorilla trekking.
Have an early breakfast in preparation for a highlight of the day – gorilla trek adventure. Soon you will depart the lodge and head to the park headquarters for a briefing session where a ranger guide explains set rules and regulations to be observed during this gorilla exploration.
After that, you will penetrate to the misty jungles of Virunga Park – which are the historical home for mountain gorillas and hundreds of other mammals, birds, insects and primates. After 2 or 3 hours of hiking, you’ll eventually come across a fully habituated family of mountain gorillas which will welcome you with the acrobatic young gorillas and caring mothers, while the giant silverback looks unbothered but ready to defend the family in case of attacks.
One hour is given to you to capture crystal clear pictures, videos and selfies. It’s such a memorable encounter!
After this adventure, retreat and trek back to the ranger station for lunch and afternoon relaxation at the lodge. Another option is to take an evening nature walk to watch lively birdlife and lush flora that characterize Virunga national park.
Day 3: Start the Nyiragongo volcano hike.
Transfer to Kibati ranger station after your breakfast, and get ready for a climbing adventure to the peak of one of the world’s most active volcano. Attend a briefing, and be assigned to guides and porters (to be hired separately) as well as hiking equipment.
The climb starts at 10:00 am and lasts for about 5 hours. The first night will be spent at the peak of Nyiragongo in the summit shelters, with views to “die for’ overlooking the cob-web like magma that prove the recent volcanic eruption that took place on this mountain in 2002.
Day 4: Descend to the mountain base and departure.
Have a breakfast on the crater rim, and later start descending at about 6:00am. The trek takes only four hours until you reach the base, where you will reconnect with your guide and transfer to Goma for an overnight stay or cross to Rwanda and depart through Kigali airport.
End of tour.
